The iPad Mini OLED (A20 Pro) is worth it for fans of small tablets: 3 critics average 8.5 out of 10, praising the OLED screen, A20 Pro performance and IP67 rating but faulting the $699 price and 60Hz refresh rate. This page is a consensus of published reviews, not hands-on testing.
Is the iPad Mini OLED worth it?
Critics broadly agree that this is a real overhaul rather than a spec bump. Trusted Reviews gave it 9 out of 10 and called it an upgrade that feels genuinely worthwhile. Macworld scored it 8 out of 10, and Engadget gave it 8.5 out of 10. The common reservation is price: at $699, Engadget says it is hard to recommend to most buyers.
What critics loved
The OLED panel is the headline. Trusted Reviews calls it a major upgrade, and Macworld says it improves display quality. The 8.5-inch Super Retina XDR screen peaks at 1,200 nits in HDR and 600 nits in SDR, according to Macworld and Engadget. Engadget also likes the nano-texture glass option for cutting glare.
The design drew praise too. Engadget notes a thinner, lighter body at 5.4mm with a larger screen, and Macworld calls it more compact with a bigger display. Trusted Reviews lists 255g for the Wi-Fi model.
Performance is strong. Trusted Reviews cites flagship A20 Pro performance, Macworld reports faster performance overall, and Engadget says the chip handles heavy tasks easily. All three highlight the IP67 rating; Trusted Reviews notes it is a first for an iPad. Engadget adds that the speakers have improved, and Macworld mentions fast charging, with 50% in 30 minutes on a 35W or higher charger.
Where it falls short
The 60Hz display is the most common complaint. All three note the lack of ProMotion, and Macworld says it holds the tablet back.
Price is next. Trusted Reviews calls $699 steep, and Engadget points to a $100 increase, with the nano-texture option costing extra.
Battery gets mixed comments. Macworld notes the 18.9 Wh battery is smaller than its predecessor's, rated for 10 hours on Wi-Fi, while Engadget says life varies with heavy use. Trusted Reviews, by contrast, credits improved efficiency. Macworld also says the cameras are unchanged from the A17 Pro model. Trusted Reviews adds smaller gripes: only two color options, speaker sound compromised by the Acoustic Display design, and small iPadOS elements and widgets.
