Apple said on November 2, during its fiscal fourth-quarter earnings call, that the iPhone Duo is supply-constrained and that it cannot predict when supply will match demand. New orders show delivery estimates in late January 2027, according to Digital Trends.
Key facts
- Apple's first foldable launched at $1,999, with a 5.4-inch outer display and a 7.6-inch inner screen, per The Verge.
- Preorders opened on October 16 and sold out within hours, according to India Today. Official sales in India began on October 23.
- Digital Trends reports the earliest shipping date is January 22, 2027, for every storage and color option.
- Apple posted a September-quarter revenue record of $114.5 billion, up 12 percent, per MacRumors. iPhone revenue was $57.58 billion, according to The Verge.
- Duo sales are not in those results because the phone went on sale after the quarter ended.
What Apple said
COO Sabih Khan told analysts the Duo is "constrained as of today" and that the ramp is going well, according to TechCrunch. He said it is hard to predict when supply and demand will balance. CEO John Ternus gave the same message to Reuters, as reported by MacRumors and The Verge.
TechCrunch adds that Apple is deepening its partnership with Perryman, a titanium producer, to supply material for the device. Verizon has been offering gift cards to customers affected by the delays.
Display issues and memory costs
Ternus told Reuters that "a very small percentage" of Duos have been returned over inner display problems, and that Apple is replacing them. MacRumors notes that Apple had earlier told affected customers to contact AppleCare.
Memory pricing is a second pressure. The Verge quotes Ternus calling current memory pricing "unprecedented" and saying Apple expects even higher memory costs in the December quarter, partly offset by recent price increases. TechCrunch reports Khan said Apple raised prices on a number of products "reluctantly", and ties the cost rise to demand for memory chips from the AI industry.
What to watch
The first hard figures on Duo sales should come with Apple's December-quarter results, as India Today notes. Until then, the shipping estimate on Apple's store is the best public signal of how fast supply is catching up.
Digital Trends offers an opinion that Apple may be keeping supply tight deliberately while it deals with the display problem. Apple has not said this, and its executives attribute the constraint to demand and component availability. Holiday availability is also unclear: buyers can check Apple Stores and carriers for stock, but online orders placed now will not arrive before the new year.
