Apple released iOS 27.2 on October 26, the first major update to iOS 27. According to Ars Technica, it focuses heavily on Siri AI, which can now recall past conversations, draw on more personal data and work in five additional languages.
Key facts
- Siri AI memory: Siri AI can recall earlier conversations, such as restaurants it recommended previously. It is supported on all iPhone 16 models and later, iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max, per Apple's release notes.
- New languages: French, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese and Spanish. Siri AI remains unavailable in the EU and mainland China.
- New sources: photos attached in Messages, Calendar event attendees, voicemails, and better results from Safari history and Reading List.
- Security: MacRumors reports that the update addresses more than 160 vulnerabilities, none of them actively exploited.
- Other platforms: ZDNET says 27.2 versions also shipped for iPad, Mac, Apple Watch, Apple TV, Vision Pro and HomePod.
What changes for Siri AI
Beyond memory and wider sources, Apple added an Excluded Apps setting that controls which apps Siri, Search and suggestions can access. MacRumors notes it replaces the earlier App Access feature, which required excluding apps one at a time. Granular text selection lets users copy just part of a Siri response.
Photos and Image Playground gain SynthID watermarking support. MacRumors says watermarks apply to Image Playground images, to the Extend and Reframe tools, and to large Clean Up edits, and can be checked with Google's SynthID Detector website.
Other additions
FaceTime Dual Capture, which streams the front and rear cameras at once, now works in group calls. Per MacRumors, it is available on the iPhone 17, iPhone 17 Pro, iPhone 17 Pro Max, iPhone Air, iPhone 18 Pro, iPhone 18 Pro Max and iPhone Duo. ZDNET notes the other participant also needs to be on 27.2. FaceTime also lets users add a third-party sign language interpreter or live captioner.
Messages gets context-based suggestions, such as adding a dinner invite to Calendar. The Apple TV app adds profiles on iPhone, and 9to5Mac says a child's profile limits viewing to age-appropriate content. Podcasts splits Up Next into New Episodes and Continue Playing. Multiview now lets iPhone users watch up to four live sports streams, with an Apple TV subscription.
The iPhone Duo gains USB-C Apple Pencil support and Edge Light for dim video calls. MacRumors says the release also brings a black-and-white Apple Music icon, replacing the red one.
What is missing and what to watch
The redesigned Health app appeared in the 27.2 betas but is not in the release. Apple says it is still coming later this year. ZDNET expects it likely with iOS 27.3 in December, which is the outlet's expectation rather than an Apple statement.
MacRumors also reports that App Tracking Transparency now offers an alternative expanded prompt for EU users, with annual re-prompting. The alternative prompt is required in France, Germany, Italy, Poland and Romania.
