Apple's first foldable phone, the iPhone Duo, went on sale Friday, October 23, in 70 countries and regions, but supply is tight. According to GSMArena, customers ordering online now face shipping dates pushed to January on the official Apple Store.
Lines, limited stock
9to5Mac reports that lines formed overnight at Apple Stores worldwide from people hoping to buy a unit as a walk-in. Apple had warned that retail inventory would be "limited," and that appears to have held true. Store workers told disappointed shoppers to check the Apple Store app the next day at 10 a.m. ET for in-store inventory details.
Apple executives marked the launch in person. Greg Joswiak was at the Fifth Avenue store in New York, and CEO John Ternus was at the Domain NORTHSIDE location in Austin, Texas, according to 9to5Mac.
GSMArena adds that some third-party retailers, including Amazon, have the phone in stock, though supply there appears to be running out quickly. Customers who pre-ordered during the past week should begin receiving their devices.
App support at launch
Apple also published a list of apps optimized for the foldable screen, per GSMArena. Netflix, Prime Video and Paramount+ use both the cover and main displays and support half-folded tabletop mode. Zoom can turn the inner display into a "conference room" layout showing key participants and shared content. Slack, Salesforce, Instagram and VLLO are also on the list, along with the games Asphalt Legends, Zenless Zone Zero and UnGodly.
Price and repair costs
The Duo is priced from $1,999 to $3,199, which TechSpot calls Apple's most expensive phone to date. TechSpot also points to Apple's repair page, where estimated out-of-warranty costs range from $49 for cover layer damage to $1,499 for "other damage." Inner display damage costs $999 to fix.
With AppleCare+, the same repairs drop sharply:
- Cover layer: $49, or $19 with AppleCare+
- Back glass: $199, or $25
- Battery service: $229, or free
- Rear camera: $229, or $99
- Outer display: $379, or $29
- Inner display: $999, or $99
- Other damage: $1,499, or $149
TechSpot notes that AppleCare with theft and loss coverage costs $20 per month or $200 per year, or $399 upfront for two years. It also notes that Apple's prices are likely higher than those of most third-party repair shops.
