Garena announced on Tuesday, October 27, 2026, that Free Fire India (FFI) will launch on October 28 as a free, standalone app on the Apple App Store and Google Play Store. The game is a localized version of the battle royale title and arrives with safety controls built in, according to FoneArena and Gadgets 360.
Key facts
- Launch date: October 28, 2026, as a free download on the App Store and Google Play.
- Format: a standalone app, separate from the existing Free Fire Max.
- Safety features: mandatory parental consent for players under 18, break reminders, playtime limits and in-game spending caps.
- Data: the game is hosted on servers located in India.
- Launch content: a Diwali event running until November 15.
What Garena is promising
FoneArena reports that FFI aims to deliver a familiar gameplay experience while adding features for the Indian market. That includes localized in-game events and campaigns. India Today describes these as events celebrating India's diverse cultures and communities.
Garena also says the app is optimized for a broad range of smartphones, so it should not be limited to higher-end hardware. Whether that holds across low-end devices will only be clear after release.
Safety, compliance and the backstory
Garena says it developed the responsible gaming measures after engaging with Indian government stakeholders, and that it added enhanced data protection, including hosting entirely on servers in India. India Today notes that how these features work in practice will become clearer once the game is live.
The context matters. India Today reports that Free Fire was banned in India in February 2022, along with dozens of other apps with Chinese links, when it reportedly had more than 40 million Indian users. Free Fire Max, launched globally in September 2021, stayed available in India. In 2023 Garena announced an India-specific edition with MS Dhoni as ambassador and a September 5 launch, then delayed it days before that date without giving a new one.
India Today frames the return as following BGMI, another popular mobile battle game that came back to the market.
Esports plans and what to watch
Garena says it will work with local partners to build competitive pathways, from grassroots and collegiate play up to international tournaments. The sources do not name partners, prize pools or a tournament schedule.
